Veiled Woman

Artist: Sharmaine Rayner

How this artwork fits with the Art of Repair:

Sharmaine Rayner says:

I painted this painting of a veiled woman some time before the Pandemic. I love to explore the beauty in people and cultures, but this painting received a lot of mixed reactions. When children saw this painting, they said it was their favorite out of a wall of my other pieces. The children saw the beauty in the woman and had no bias. People here in America had biases such as The oppression of women & Muslim Culture. During the pandemic and to this day, a majority of the world was masked up and had their faces covered. Was that oppression? Many people still choose to cover their faces today for their own protection of their health. We should all be able to talk about our cultures and beliefs and learn about one another, respect and admire one another, out of human love just like the children did, before placing hateful biases on individual people.
